The Light Within You

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,

but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed

only if there is a light from within.”

- Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

Have you ever noticed how even the smallest flame casts a light, despite how heavy the darkness surrounding it is? A single candle may not light up an entire room, but it will shed enough light to dispel the darkness around it. It’s often the same with the light that comes from within us.

Each of us has an inner light. This light reveals our true beauty, self, and strengths. These lights are kindled by our own visions, passions, and perceptions of ourselves. Though they come from within, the radiance of these lights touches others through our actions and outward expressions.

Life often brings times of darkness, times of trial and fear, times that test our resolve, and times that wound our spirits. During these times, our inner lights either shine brightly or are easily muted or even extinguished. Self doubt, despair, and fear can hide our lights–if we let them. But with strength and determination, we can fan that inner light–even during the darkest periods of our lives.

How do you treat the light within you? Do you fan that flame light? Or, do you let life’s challenges snuff it out?

The light within you reveals your true self, beauty, and strength. The outside world needs your light–maybe now more than ever. So let it shine!

If your light’s not radiating its brightest light, ask yourself the following questions to help you figure out why:

  1. How bright do you feel the light is within you?

  2. Do you let your light shine in times of hardship, or do you allow your light to be extinguished?

  3. What areas in your life are kindling your inner light? What areas are extinguishing it?

  4. Are there any persons, situations, or events in your life in need of your inner light?

  5. What are some ways you can make a more mindful effort to kindle the light within?

Learn to kindle the light within, and let it shine–no matter how thick the darkness outside.
