“Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words.

Keep your words positive because your words become your behavior.

Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habits.

Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values.

Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.”

Mahatma Gandhi

Our way of thinking is responsible for most everything in our lives—from what we do, to who we are. It’s for this reason that positive thinking is so crucial. Being positive can brighten our outlook, help us meet challenges and difficulties from a position of strength, and even encourage those around us.

Positivity radiates from within us and spreads outward to impact how we perceive situations, how we interact with others, and how we embrace opportunities.

Positive people seem to have a unique way of seeing the world around them and a unique vocabulary to describe it and communicate with it. They often detect opportunities within difficulties or tribulations and see struggles as opportunities for growth. They find solutions to dilemmas. They face obstacles without discouragement. They solve problems rather than assigning blame.

In the same way, a negative mindset pervades almost every aspect of our lives—our perspectives, relationships, and our very beings. Negativity spawns destructive actions, harmful interactions, and a dismissive attitude toward the opportunities presented to us.

Just how positive a thinker are you?

Ask yourself these questions to determine where you can banish negativity and boost your positivity:

  1. Do you find yourself often thinking the worst of a person or situation?

  2. When experiencing difficulty in one area of your life, do you begin to feel negatively about other areas?

  3. When faced with a problem, do you readily work on finding a solution, or do you instead experience stress and anxiety?

  4. Do you view constructive criticism as a growth opportunity, or does it make you feel negatively about yourself or your talents?

  5. What areas of your life would benefit from a more positive mindset about yourself—and others?

  6. Do you feel that your current mindset is holding you back and/or causing conflict in your life?

Mindset matters—more than we often realize. Thinking positively can improve your thoughts, actions, habits, and relationships. Work to change your mindset today—and see how the glass that was once half empty begins to fill up.
