“Beware the barrenness of a busy life.”
- Socrates
Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “There just aren’t enough hours in the day”? Or maybe, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead”? You probably have. At some point or another, we all have.
Somewhere along the way, life becomes so full of things to do and places to be that we can barely keep up. Each day seems to become shorter and shorter, making it nearly impossible to check off all the items on our “to-do” lists. Our days seem to become endlessly busy.
Sometimes, however, being busy is just that: busy-ness.
Staying busy is not necessarily a sign of productivity. In fact, many activities can be a waste of time and energy. And time, as we know, is a precious commodity that must be invested wisely.
So, strive to invest your time in things that yield real, meaningful results. Invest your time in things that matter–instead of just things. Set clear, purposeful priorities–and rid your day of the excessive or wasteful.
Learn to say no to time- and energy-consumers that don’t align with your priorities. And, consider the following questions as you decide how to better invest your time and avoid superfluous busy-ness:
What matters most in my life?
Am I investing in them, or am I too busy?
Where is most of my time being spent?
Are the activities taking up my time moving me away from or near to my priorities?
In the end, it won’t matter how you spent your time, but rather how you invested it. Avoid the emptiness of busy-ness.
